GCIP!
Yay, I found a Christmas icon! Because nothing says the holidays quite like cranky Matthew Perry and Nazi!Santa. Also I had to find a Danny/Jordan icon because they have eaten my brain and it is really kind of shameful. (Now up to eight viewings of "The Christmas Show.") But they're so cute! He's all "YAY!" and she's all "what." and it's fantastic. I have a ship now, so I'm thoroughly attached to the show.
Oh and okay, we borrowed Sports Night from
lemurtanis and
yandros, and
sirrogue has been watching it and I've been sort-of watching but mostly listening, but then we got to the episodes where there was William H. Macy, and I got all excited because FILLIAM H. MUFFMAN! There was no zeppelin, though. But that amused me for a solid half-hour.
AND ALSO! The lone Golden Globe nomination for S60 was Sarah Paulson? Really? I mean-- really? Harriet? Are you sure? I mean, I'm sure Bradley Whitford's at home crying into his pile of Emmys, but--really?

I actually really like Sarah Paulson's acting on Studio 60 - I think the whole cast is quite good, actually. I so love that Matt Perry is getting to do more than be Chandler. Could he *be* less like Chandler? ;-)

See I think my thing is I'm just so "eh" on Harriet. I understand that they're presenting her and Matt as the root-for couple, I'm just not acknowledging it. *g* But I definitely adore Matthew Perry! He's absolutely wonderful in the role. There are occasionally teeny-tiny flashes of Chandler that come through, and they make me smile.

I think I'm rooting more for the other couple (Amanda Peet and Bradley) - I don't know that Matt gets Harriet at all still - if you can't respect someone's religious beliefs (even if you don't agree with them), then how can you have a relationship? I like Harriet, and I like what they are trying to explore with her, though I don't know if they are going far enough with it, to be honest. It's interesting trying to have essentially a religious fundamentalist in showbiz, and a show that makes fun of religion. I feel like they pull back a bit on it (ie, she's not against pre-marital sex) - the only remotely controversial thing was what she said about homosexuality, and even that wasn't that bad.
Funnily enough, Jennifer Hudson (American Idol/Dreamgirls) just had the exact same thing happen to her - it was like life imitating art or vice versa. I mean she literally said the exact thing that Harriet did - and she has a large gay following. But I don't think they twisted her words like they did Harriets as much. I just thought it was interesting.
And personally, I'm not a religious fundamentalist, so it's not like I fully relate to Harriet, but I am Catholic and a scientist, so I'm kind of in the middle.
Ok, that was way too long -sorry! :-)

I can understand how Matt and Harriet had a relationship in the first place-- it can be easy enough to ignore someone's religious and/or political beliefs if the subject never comes up in an adverse way. But yeah, as they stand now I don't see how it can work without a serious mental adjustment on Matt's part. Their relationship is supposed to be based on the one between Aaron Sorkin and Kristin Chenoweth, and that one didn't work out so well, so.
I hadn't heard that about Jennifer Hudson. Interesting.
And your post was not too long! I'm glad to have someone to talk about the show with. :)

I didn't know that about Aaron Sorkin and Kristin Chenowith, but it totally makes sense!
Here's the blog entry I read about Jennifer Hudson if you're interested:
It's somewhere on the middle of this page:
http://trent.blogspot.com/2006/12/letter-of-truth-thanking-gods-for.html
Jennifer Hudson is on the cover of the new issue of The Advocate magazine, which caters to the LGBT audience, and it's no secret that she has been courting the Gay audience since she started doing promo for Dreamgirls -- which I think is awesome. But there is much ballyhoo over an interview that Jennifer gave to the Dallas Voice newspaper where it seems that she was caught off guard by the interviewer and was forced to give the answers that the interviewer was looking for.
How Christian is Hudson? As a kid, Hudson says she visited Dallas a few times. "For church conventions," she explains. What's her faith background? "I'm Baptist, if that's what you mean," she says ... As a Baptist who's singing at circuit party, has Hudson reconciled her spiritual beliefs and her gay fan base? Does she support same-sex marriage? "Nobody has ever asked me these questions," she says. "Everybody sins," Hudson continues. "No sin is greater or different than the other. To each his own. If it don't bother Jennifer, then Jennifer don't mind. I don't really even think about it because I don't believe in judging people for what they do." When referencing themselves, lots of divas probably do that schizophrenic thing where they toggle between first and third person. But did Hudson just say that being gay is a sin? "According to the way we're taught, and what it says in the Bible -- it is," Hudson says. If her answers didn't already sound like fundamentalist cliches, Hudson then added, "I have plenty of gay friends." C'mon, it's clear to me that the interviewer was only interested in getting Jennifer to say something that could be perceived as "anti-gay" in order to give the story the controversy it needed to reach a wider audience -- unfortch, the little ploy worked. The interviewer actually tried to portray her as fundamentalist?! That is ridiculous. Jennifer does not strike me as "anti-gay" in the least, in fact, she strikes me as quite the opposite. In response to this interview, Jennifer has responded personally on her blog on her official website:
"In a recent interview, I was asked how I reconciled being a Christian with performing at events for my gay fans. I find it upsetting that some folks equate being a Christian with being intolerant of gay people. That may, unfortunately, be true for some, but it is not true for me. I have talked often of my love and support of the gay community. I have said again and again that it was the gay community that supported me long before and long after AMERICAN IDOL, and kept me working and motivated. It is the gay community that celebrated my voice and my size and my personality long before DREAMGIRLS. Yes, I was raised Baptist. Yes, I was taught that the Bible has certain views on homosexuality. The Bible also teaches us not to judge. It teaches us to love one another as God loves us all. I love my sister, my two best friends and my director dearly. They happen to be gay. So what? While some search for controversy, I hope that my friends and fans who know me, know where I stand." -Jhud
It's clear that she is not shying away from the gay community ... not that she needs to court it either. I think she has been handling herself just fine. Everything that she says when it comes to religion is going to be scrutinized to death ... it just comes with the territory. I'm with you J. Hud ... you're deff all good in my book. It don't bother Trent and Trent don't mind.
Totally reminded me of Harriet! :-)

I can't wait to see Dreamgirls! It's going to be so awesome. :)

The blogger I quoted is gay - so it's nice to hear his two cents on the issue. Especially since in Studio 60, Harriet did not get such a positive reaction for her misquotement or what-have-you..
I want to see Dreamgirls too - but then I'm somewhat of a sucker for musicals! :-)

I'd give Sarah Paulson a nom for her spot-on Nancy Grace and Holly Hunter imitations alone. Who knew?

Is that the one where she just refused to acknowledge it, or is there another one? We haven't finished the series yet.
I was mostly decorating the Christmas tree while we watched the William H. Macy episodes so I wasn't paying too terribly much attention. :) I was mostly just excited because Filliam H. Muffman (http://youtube.com/watch?v=hSLPRU_Noyg) hasn't stopped being funny for me yet. *g*

And I have to agree, Filliam H. Muffman is still funny. Funnier for me since I renamed a South African wine after them.
