Hey guys, I need a little help here. This is for anyone who's seen either of the Star Wars: Musical Edition DVDs (2003 or Trilogy version)-- what moments or clips from the DVDs do you think would best represent the show to someone who never saw it live? A dialogue, a song, a dance, an effect, a costume, a set piece, a prop, whatever snippets you think encapsulate the show. (This is DVD-specific-- unfortunately a lot of great stuff that was seen onstage never made it to the DVD, like Luke's falling hand in the Bespin duel, or the vast majority of the Sarlacc battle. So you don't have to have seen the show live to answer!)

A zillion thanks for any suggestions y'all can give!

perhaps a few shots of the final ANH battle scene, where you see counterpointing sides on different parts of the stage...

and some of the obi-wan/luke from early in ANH...

from ESB, maybe some of "One night in Bespin" if the sound is good..

it might work best if you found parts that had the clearest audio (some of the vader dialogue/songs didnt come too clear on the DVD)..

do you have separate audio recordings of the show?

i've only gotten to seeing ANH and ESB so far, so i don't have any help on which ROTJ scenes to go with...

The 'West Side Story' song on Tatooine with the droids. Are you gonna put some clips up on Youtube or something? You really should, if not. :D

I think one of the, dare I say, iconic moments of the show has been the stormtrooper tapdance tag (i.e. the Imperial Striptease).

Maybe a big, brash production number that shows the stage as a big tableau and shows off a lot of crazy costumes? That seems like it would work well.

The first thing that comes to mind is Luke/Vader "Pirates" duel from Act V

I was always partial to ben, han, and chewy up in the cockpit of the falcon, with the fuzzy dice and the ford logo.

(especially when they are either all leaning the same way or looking at each other funny for leaning different ways.)

:oD

Followed in the 2003 show with the Uncle Owen, Aunt Beru and Luke dinner scene ("This milk is blue" "What did we just *sing* about!?" "He's not much of a dancer"). It certainly captured the respect for the original film with just the right amount of twinkle-in-the-eye irreverance.

from the Trilogy version, perhaps "The Force Fugue" number in Act IV? Good interaction of the three guys, and clever lyrics ref'ing Ep I ("what the heck is a miticlorian?")
And, of course, shots of the Emperor and his throne from Act VI :-)

Yeah, with the Trilogy DVD the audio is a *huge* issue. I would love to use some One Night In Bespin stuff but ugh, the audio, so bad. If I get started ranting I won't stop, so I shall say nothing more.

We do have a separate audio recording of the '03 version, which I have in mp3 format.

Good idea, the dancing Jawas and droids and all. I hadn't thought about Youtube but you're right, that is a good idea!

And since it didn't make Trilogy, we can have it for posterity. Good suggestion!

See, I would go for that, but the filming of the duel was really not so good. Maybe I can find a piece of it that works well.

Good suggestion! Haha, the throne, of course we will have pics of that for sure. ;-) Maybe video!

You should get a livejournal, Dad, it would make these things easier (and you could read my locked posts).

I never knew stormtrooper armor could shake like that until I asked Kenny to shimmy in it...gah!

One of my favorite songs is the "Music of the Knight" from the ANH portion of the trilogy. It is a pivotal scene IMHO.

Two of my other favorites were the ANH Death Star trench scene, and the ESB Hoth AT-AT attack scenes. It showcases your ability to take a complex scene in the films and modify it for the stage, and do it very well.

I would suggest "my only hope" from the 2003. I think it's got a lot of the things that are fun about the show. The song parody itself is amusing, yet the lyrics are serious and fit really well with the music. It's got some of the meta humour ("could this be love at first sight" and "I'm too old for this sh... sort of thing" if you include the scene after) and the tech looks pretty good (well, if you ignore the big white sheet in the background.) And it certainly doesn't hurt that it has two of the best singers in the show in it. Unfortunately, I sing a little in there too :(
