Here begins the journal. I apologize in advance for the style in which it's written; Amy and I bought Bridget Jones's Diary at Logan before our flight to Italy and, well, we sort of got steeped it it. Anyway! On with the show.

*****
The Beehive
Rome, Italy

Left for airport around 1:30 pm after Amy money crisis (fixed, thank heaven). Check-in line not too bad. Amy had to have her shoes sent through the X-ray machine at security. :) Ate at ABP, got caramel sundae at McDonald's (yay!). Bought books for entertainment-- Bridget Jones's Diary for me, Ahab's Wife for Amy.

Plane was gorgeous. Seating 2-4-2 in economy, Amy and I in a 2 together. She had window, I took aisle. Seats v. comfy, w/ nifty headrest that could be adjusted for comfy sleep. Blankets and pillows for all. Yay! Lufthansa fantastic airline. Free headsets, free alcohol (though we didn't have any), dinner and breakfast on flight, also warm towel after wake-up. V. good. Movie was Domestic Disturbance (ugh, John Travolta needs better hair), oddly found myself getting caught up in it. Napped for a couple of hours. Want to fly first class, their seats lie down.

Landed in Frankfurt OK. Terminal v. metallic. Nothing open at 5:30 am. Flight to Rome OK, more breakfast served, but had to sit next to v. annoying woman. Arrived Rome at 8:30, all good. Bags not lost (hurrah!). Changed money at airport bank (6% service fee!) and bought train tickets to Rome proper. On train sat next to Adán and Carlos for Harvard, nice guys if a trifle annoying, chatted about plans. Said goodbye at Rome station.

Found Beehive after going wrong way first time. V. cute hostel, red bunk beds. Left luggage, headed for Coliseum (v. close to hostel). Bought combo tix (8 euro) for Coliseum & Palatine. Coliseum v. big, v. impressive. Only thing missing was Russell Crowe. Next went to Palatine, 8 euro totally worth it. gardens v. v. v. gorgeous, ruins amazing. V. peaceful, calming experience. Weather is gorgeous (75 F) but a bit hot when climbing steps in sun. Saw at least 3 cats & 1 lizard. Also visited Rome Forums, ruins, pretty cool. Amy & I on same brainwave as both made similar comments about Indiana Jones & Last Crusade, also Anasazi cliff-dwellers. Both exhausted by end of forums, decide to walk home. Got gelato on way (good), had pizza at place recommended by Beehive (good). Also stopped at Internet cafe on way home, 15 min for 1.50 euro. Mailed Mom, Dad, and Rogue, and stopped in at starwars.com to say hi. Amy & I v. v. v. tired by will not go to bed till at least 8 pm so will be adjusted to Italy time.

Italy observations so far: Cars v. tiny. Motorbikes scary like devil.
