Gragh. Should not have waited so long to get GC airfares. Called up United reservations to use my frequent flyer miles, and we *can* get flights on the dates we want, they're just lousy itineraries at lousy times. Sunday is particularly bad, because we'd leave Indy at 9 am (therefore no Sunday GenCon), fly through *Dulles,* and then get into San Diego at 3 pm that afternoon. The tickets are on hold, so we can still make changes. Am wondering if it would be better to just stay Sunday night (an extra ~$80 for the both of us, assuming we are still in a room w/ 4 people) and fly out on Monday. Of course I didn't ask the United guy what the Monday flights were like.

Argh. Argh argh argh. >:(

Not sure if you've tried this yet, but www.itn.net is a good way to check prices on available flights for all airlines. I found that Monday is generally cheaper (and easier) to fly out on. The extra money you'd spend on flying out Sunday could be used for the hotel room, so you spend about the same either way.

Well, the thing is that I want to use my frequent-flyer miles for these tickets, so that they're free. The question is, are we willing to pay an extra $80 or so (and lose a day of work, although we often take Monday off anyway) to stay for Sunday?

Since I have no clue how Frequent Flyer miles work, does that means you have a set limit on how much the fare can cost? Or that you have to fly out on Sunday for it to be free? I ask, because I did find an early evening Sunday flight on United, but it cost around $534. It leaves Indy at 5:35pm and arrives in San Diego (via Chicago) at 9:42pm PST.

Otherwise, I have no idea. Sorry! :(

No, no, nothing like that. It costs 25,000 miles for a free ticket (you accumulate miles by flying, having their credit card, using their rental car/hotel/restaurant/whatever partners). On most airlines, they have a few seats on every flight set aside for frequent-flyer tickets. If a seat is available, then you can get a ticket on that flight for free. So the problem here is that most of the flights already have their full complement of frequent flyers, so we're stuck with the assy flights. There *may* be more open seats on Monday, but I didn't ask the reservations guy so I don't know.

This is why we're going to start flying Southwest. Once you earn a free ticket through their program, you can use it on any flight where there are seats available.
