D*C is next week, which means con season is coming to a close for me, and it's time to think about starting stuff for 2008. And my costuming mojo seems to be back, so I actually want to sew again! NEVER LEAVE ME AGAIN, MOJO. I'm shamelessly stealing [livejournal.com profile] ladyamaryllis's idea and posting a possible list of costumes for next year. Some are definites, some are maybes, so if you have any thoughts on what I should do, lemme know!

1. DEFINITE: Mal's browncoat (Firefly) for [livejournal.com profile] sirrogue. It's two years late. I am a terrible costuming wife.

2. DEFINITE: Tristan and Yvaine (Stardust) for [livejournal.com profile] sirrogue and myself. OMG LOVE THESE COSTUMES. These'll likely be hall costumes for SDCC, GenCon, and whatever else we go to.

3. DEFINITE: Laughing Moon silverado corset. For to go under my Shindig Kaylee, and just for general use. I have all the materials, just gotta fit my muslin and make the damn thing.

4. STRONG MAYBE: Marie Antoinette sort-of chemise dress. I feel lame cause I didn't actually make one for D*C, and I really really want to! I love this one best because of that ridiculously adorable peplum.

5. STRONG MAYBE: Lizzie's "I have TWO swords," um, shirt (POTC:AWE), for to go about with Barbossa and two swords apiece.

6. STRONG MAYBE: Ravenclaw student robes (Harry Potter). I really should make a HP costume before the last two movies come out...I'm already too late for the books.

7. MAYBE: Padme EpI Battle Handmaiden, because I've always meant to, and I do love it to pieces.

8. MAYBE: Jaina, the NEGTC version (Star Wars). Because I mean, I've been Jaina for 11 years and haven't made her costume yet?

9. MAYBE: Hindi Wedding Gown (Moulin Rouge). I'm afeared of the construction, but I love this dress SO MUCH. Making it depends on finding fabric, though. (Sari stores?)

Looks good!!

Definitely go join and peruse [livejournal.com profile] corsetmakers -- they have tons of advice/info on all the different patterns, including that one, and are really helpful with advice.

I'm thinking I might make some things... this year for the first time in Idon'tknowhowlong I made *myself* not one, but two costumes! Very excited :)
I'd love to do Tristan's Mother (Una), or Lamia, and also make Captain Shakespeare for Brian.... the "true self" one!

You amaze me. I just made my first fitted thing ever (it's a crocheted summer sweater... just in time for fall!) and it was SO HARD to fit. I am so impressed. I will post pictures soon, btw.

My brain is aching right now, so I can't comment much more than to say that the Hindi Wedding Gown is both gorgeous and it makes my boobies hurt just looking at it.

If you do do Battle!Padme, there's a bunch of gals in RL that would LOVE a tutorial. (I want to do the Decoy Battle dress so bad).

Wow, we love the saaaame stuff! Battle Padme is next on my Star Wars list and Hindi Wedding Gown is my favorite from Moulin Rouge! lol

Hmm...I think I vote for Battle Padme. I don't think it is *too* difficult to make, and it has a big fun payoff because lots of people will recognize it. :D

Oooh, Hindi wedding dress...I actually would love to have the Hindi sad diamonds (midriff-baring) costume worn before this, but my sewing skillz are not that mad. (Nor, frankly, are my abs good enough to pull it off.)

Seriously. Handmaid battle dress. Because those are just awesome.

I know it is a maybe, but you should do a HP student robe!

As for the Mal coat, my friend has a coat made by the designer who made the coat for the TV show using the same pattern he used for the show, the same leather and hardware - etc. (he actually takes commissions!) If you need any kind of reference off of it let me know, I'm sure she'd be happy to let me look at it again and make any notes you need.

Thanks for the link!

"And remember, Captain Shakespeare has a fearsome reputation!" DOOO IT!!! Then come to a con so we can all parade around together! CostumeCon is in San Jose this spring... :)

Aw, thank you! But fitting crocheted/knitted stuff is REALLY HARD. I haven't even done it, I've only ever made baby things that don't have to be fitted. With sewing stuff you just rip out seams...but with yarn it's like "okay and now I have to rip out EVERYTHING I JUST DID." So I really want to see pics of your sweater! Because you are awesome!

I think there's already some pretty good info out there...most people have used that GWTW "curtains dress" pattern, although it's no longer in print. And the LOTR research site has excellent instructions on adding rolled collars.

Well, I think we both have excellent taste then! :D

I do really want to do Battle Padme...it would be fun to have a whole little squad of battle handmaidens running around!

The ones from the Ebay auctions, or different ones? I've been saving the Ebay ones. I'm so kicking myself for not bidding on the stunt skirt...it only went for $35! It would have been great for material/color reference. :(

Sister Sola has a nice version of Hindi Sad Diamonds: http://sistersola.com/saddiamonds.html

Lots of votes for the battlemaiden! That may have to go on the "definite" list...

I know, I really want to! I've meant to for ages, just never got around to it. I even have really nice wool for a skirt.

Ooooh, that would be so awesome if you could look at the "real" reproduction! I'll make a list of my questions for you after D*C, is that OK? Thank you!

I got outbid on it - I didn't know how high I wanted to go! I can't believe it went so low! I got outbid on the two Una costumes too. Oh well.

And yep, I meant the ebay ones! :-)

Just make sure you have a big black guy following you around narrating everything you do. "We're sitting ducks!" "The hutts are gangsters!" "The Queen commands it!"

No Minnesota on the horizon thus far. (Lots of Las Vegas! Apparently you should have gone to UNLV!) But I will definitely let you know if it happens!

The costumes in Stardust were awesome. I came out of that one with a strong urge to break out the Pfaff.

I look forward to seeing your progress through these in 2008!

Since you live in the Southland, you could make a weekend/day trip up to my neck of the woods and hit Little India, which is about ten minutes from my home. There are enough sari shops to make your head explode, and Shawna Trpcic, who did the costumes for Firefly/Serenity, did a lot of her shopping there for Inara's costumes. It's on Pioneer Blvd in the city of Artesia. I used to go there for lunch when I worked at schools in the area. Great food and fun shopping! You won't believe the level of beadwork and embroidery on some of the saris... they sell for peanuts considering the hours that went into them.

Anyway, just a thought!
