katie_m has written an excellent Stargate primer for Farscape fans who'll be tuning in for Ben and Claudia. It contains many useful and interesting facts, such as the sad lack of vomit in SG1. Oh well, can't have everything, I suppose.
Well, after reading that primer, I have to say it was pretty close to the mark. (And I also found myself LOL quite a lot.) Having not watched Farscape I can't speak to comparisons, but it is very true that Stargate is the kind of show that doesn't take itself too seriously. And, for me, that is part of it's charm.
Oh, and one thing the primer forgot to mention...
Characters: Janet Fraiser - one of the most outstanding (IMO) "supporting" characters EVER to be created in the world of fiction. Chief Medical Officer of the SGC, and an Air Force Major, she developed very solid friendships with all members of SG-1. Short and feisty, she had no qualms whatsoever about standing up to generals, Tok'ra, or even Goa'uld. Of course, she's dead now (see episode "Heroes"), which is a significant bummer. However, at least she died gloriously in the line of duty, even managing to save the life of one man (who conveniently was about to have a baby - or, at least his wife was - and they named the new lass "Janet" in the doc's honor). Oh, and it allowed Daniel the opportunity to experience even more angst (something he gets quite good at throughout the course of SG lore). And on that note, there also must be mentioned the realm of Daniel/Janet ship - a quiet little group (the primer was correct that the majority of fans fall into the Sam/Jack or Jack/Daniel camps) that tends to stay away from all the mayhem of mainstream fandom issues and exist in its own happy little world. Because, actually, although the two actors were quite happy to "play up" the issue from time to time (see episodes: 2010, Rite of Passage, and Lifeboat), and while the Dan/Jan fans were certainly happy to take that ball and run with it, the relationship has never been "officially" recognized by TPTB.
Okay. I think I've rambled long enough. But I will say that after my initial shock at learning that TPTB were adding a new regular character at this stage of the game, I am growing more and more intrigued to see what Browder will bring to my favorite show. ; )
