I think that when we go see the Serenity premiere in Boston, every single person in our group needs to be wearing a Jayne hat.

Boston knitters, call-to-arms! Who's with me!? (They're easy to knit, quick, and cheap. Instructions here or here, which I follow with a few small modifications.)

Chaaaaaaaarge!

Knitting needles: $5

3 skeins of yarn: $18

A theater full of people wearing Jayne hats? Priceless.

Psst. I was going to make one for nesodj. I was just trying to throw you off the scent so it would be a surprise. :-P

So I've been looking at those pages... what modifications have you made and what yarn do you use? Everyone I know is getting a Jayne hat for Christmas, most especially my father. Thanks so much for the post/idea. :)

I used Lamb's Pride Bulky. I've used both patterns and they both work mostly fine. I start decreasing the yellow after about 2 1/2" (instead of 3 1/2", it made the hat too big) and when doing the earflaps, I do stockinette for about 10 rows and then start decreasing every other row rather than every row. For the earflaps, I pick up 15 stitches (I tried 20 as suggested for the big hat, but that's *really* big although it is more proportional to the 64-stitch hat) and I don't place them halfway along the hat; it makes the earflaps too far forward. Ten stitches at the back and sixteen at the front seems to work well (then fifteen on each side for the earflaps, which makes fifty-six total).

You're welcome!
