Love that show. Haven't explored fic, but love the show. I like the dark-haired, understatedly sexy/kickass Jessica Alba of indeterminate ethnicity in Dark Angel rather than the blonde urban hip-hop sex symbol Jessica of current movies.
Yeh, she was definitely a product of the late-90s/early 2000s kickass chick trend a la Buffy. The current pod-person Jessica Alba is indicative of the general bimbo-ization of pop culture that has occurred since about 2002, as well as I can pointpoint it. Where we once had Buffy, Alanis Morrissette, Sleater Kinney, and last but not least, the awesome ladies of Firefly - hell, even Xena and Gabrielle - now we have Girls Gone Wild, Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson, et al. I think the period between the release of the 1999 pseudo-feminist Charlie's Angels travesty and the 2002 Paris Hilton Sex Tape scandal bookended the transitional period that replaced "strong = sexy" female icons with the current feminine parodies that fill the media. I feel sorry for my young students who have spent their formative years being bombarded with images of these less-than-positive female role models. Let's hope the pendulum swings back at some point.
Oh yeh, I forgot one thing the other day - you've probably already found them, but there were a few Dark Angel-based novels of varying quality published a few years ago. You can sometimes still find them in Borders, B&N, etc. I'm sure they're widely available used as well. I haven't explored the online fic scene, but I'm sure it exists.
So with you on the Sci Fi--I too have become addicted to DA ... and so far haven't realy found any good fiction or good recs. But I'm looking and if I find any, I'll send 'em your way!
I tell you, I'm a key example of "you run a marathon of a show--you'll get addicted viewer." Worked that way to hook me on "The Pretender," "Law and Order: SVU" ... and Sci Fi is notorious for that for me!
Yeah, SVU is now a guilty pleasure of mine, gosh love USA for repeating it so many times! Pretender I can't believe I missed the first original run but the DVD's are worth it--especially if you listen to the Michael T. Weiss and Andrea Parker commentary on "Bloodlines" (Season 2 finale). They are hysterical talking about the characters and the J/MP relationship.
I heard that commentary was really funny! And that Harve Presnell will still sometimes call up Andrea Parker and say "Angel? It's Daddy" which I think may be the awesomest thing ever.
It was a hysterical commentary--they kept going on about the relationship and the brother/sister verses romantic that the writers couldn't seem to decide about. That and AP did say that Harve still calls her up--which I just went 'awwwww' to.
Now if they'd ONLY make a third movie and resolve things with those darned scrolls!
I totally loved how their dynamic was so hard to pin down. *They* didn't even know what they were! And it's even more amazing when you think about it, because they were actually *together* onscreen so rarely. That their connection and chemistry shone through when they were mostly just on the phone...man. Now I needs me some fic.
I actually never saw either of the movies. They came out while I was in college and didn't have a TV. They're probably on DVD, though, huh?
