Somewhere in the neighborhood of 5 am last night (or today, rather), Debby and I were discussing Lost, and found a somewhat interesting parallel:

Sawyer pretends to have no conscience, but deep down he really does care (and he's just a sad little boy who lost his parents, awwwwwwwwwww). Kate, on the other hand, seems to pretend to have a conscience, but deep down she may be short one Jiminy Cricket. The Kate thing is mostly speculation, but from what we saw last week could well be true. Debby pointed out that Kate had to have done something pretty horrible for so many cops to be after her so quickly, and that her motives in convincing Sun to poison the water were likely purely selfish. Plus, her mother's reaction to her-- yikes.

This is the part where I wish Kate were played by someone with slightly more dramatic ability and depth. Like, oh, say...anyone else. :-P

Also, the hair-cutting scene? SO adorable!

Right on. Sawyer is the way he is precisely because he *does* have a conscience and a strong sense of right and wrong; he seeks revenge upon the world in general and the real "Sawyer" in particular because of the wrong done to him and his family. Kate appears, when push comes to shove, to be completely amoral -- survival is the only thing that matters (think we've seen that several times in the flashbacks and now with the Sun poisoning incident). Having feelings for the past-you-lost/road-not-taken and for certain people in your past may indicate the glimmerings of some basic goodness inside, but it doesn't constitute a conscience.

Am certain that it's redundant at this point to note that all the characters we've met in any depth so far had "lost" someone or something or their own way in life *before* they got on the plane. Guess Locke alluded to that when he told Shannon that the island was everyone's chance to start over. Cue the "Amazing Grace" music....
