jaina: (rainbow dress)

So [livejournal.com profile] benaequee had this idea last year for a Star Wars costume quilt where people would claim a costume they'd made and use their scraps to make a quilt square. Then [livejournal.com profile] benaequee would piece them together in a quilt and we'd raffle/auction off the whole thing for charity at C4. I claimed Padme's Ep2 Deleted Scene Family Gown, cause someone had already claimed the rainbow dress. But I ended up making a rainbow square anyway, as you can see. My squares definitely aren't as intricate and beautiful as [livejournal.com profile] kay_dee70's or Obi-Dawn's, but I think they turned out okay.

Originally I had wanted to do something echoing the front bodice of the dress, rather than the back, but I didn't have enough leftover trim and Jo-Ann no longer carries it. So I went for the back instead, because I really do love that open, arched triangle framed by the back bodice (such as it is). I re-dyed scraps left over from making my dress with Dylon warm-water dye (the kind you get at Jo-Ann) in an equal mix of turquoise and royal blue. This fabric did *not* want to hold the dye-- I ended up boiling the dyepot to try and get it to fix-- and the dye job came out very unevenly. Luckily I'd dyed far more than I needed. But I definitely won't be be trying to re-dye my actual dress anytime soon.

This one was completely last-minute because the person who had claimed the rainbow square never actually made it. I used my original test pieces of charmeuse, where I tried blending the colors for the first time. Luckily the scale was just about right for the quilt squares (which are 12"x12" with 1" seam allowances). I would have liked to have done something that echoed the flow and drape of the dress, maybe done a representation of the neckpiece, but this was just totally thrown together and I'm fairly pleased with it.
It was a fun little project. Made me feel like maybe I could convince my long-absent costume mojo to come back to me. (I'm pretty happy with my knitting right now, though.)

What a great idea! How many squares do you have right now?
