Costume peeps going to D*C: Do you march in the parade? If so, with what group? Do you have to sign up with a group ahead of time or can you join up when you get there? Is it so early and so far away that it's not even worth doing?

The sparkly Han vest now has pockets and topstitching! Hurray! It now looks much more like, well, Han's vest. [livejournal.com profile] kay_dee70, your page and photos were great for helping me figure out the topstitching! I didn't go for accurate pockets, partly due to time, partly because, er, this vest just isn't accurate. I'm pretty sure the rhinestone Falcon gives that away, you know? So I just did plain rectangular patch pockets. Easy peasy.

I wanted to pick up some hook-and-eye tape to replace the velcro on my Elizabeth plum dress, now that it doesn't need to be a quick-release front, and apparently Jo Ann doesn't sell it! What the hell? Where do y'all get your hook and eye tape? It's too late for D*C, but at least for the future...

Today was the first day of the fall semester at the community college, which meant ballet started today! WOO! We didn't dance, cause it's the first day, but I was so happy to be back, and the teacher was happy to see me and gave me a hug! I love our teacher-- she's this tiny German lady, somewhere in her seventies, and she's just the right amount of strict. Tomorrow is my first pattern drafting class, and I am SUPER EXCITED about it!

I think there's an explanation of how to do the parade in the schedule book towards the front? I believe you just have to get there 20 minutes before and join the group that's doing your costume theme. (I.e., Star Wars, POTC, Star Trek, etc...)

The parade audience is actually made up more of locals who aren't attending the con. Parents bring down their kids to see the costumes and the actors they've talked into participating. They get pretty excited.

I think most people make their decision based on a) getting up early to get into costume and b) the weather at the time of the parade. (This year, actually expected to be reasonable. Some years, it's already in the upper 90's during parade time.)

Groups sign up in advance. Then you join the up with with
your group of choice.

I will be marching with the Colonial Fleet, a BSG
group formed last year for things like this. You can see me
as President Roslin.

I can still find hook and eye tape at Hancock Fabrics.
But Steinlauf and Stoller stiil has it if you
don't have a Hancocks where you live.

See you at D*C I hope.

The park where everyone meets up to be formed into their groups for marching is about 5 blocks away from the hotels, so not far, takes about 10 or so minutes to walk there depending on your costume, I think you have to be at the park at 9:30, so you can wait around for awhile, take group photos, and then I think the parade starts at 10. Then it's over and your back at the hotels by, oh, 10:20... ;) Okay maybe 11.

I'm with the Dr. Who group this year.

Oh and if you wanted to join the Star Wars section, I think there's a thread on the Rebel Legion forum, in the D*C section, where you can sign up.

Yay for pattern drafting! I've had nothing but fun in my courses so far. They really speak to my technical side! Being a science person yourself I think you'll have an awesome time! There's just something about doing stuff the "exact" way vs. guesstimating that I get a kick out of.

Oh, I didn't know my little write up about Han was so helpful! I didn't even see this post before the con, otherwise I would have taken a look at your husbands pockets - lol! I was so zoned out half the time. Did you end up being able to march in the Parade?

Oh geez, don't look at his pockets! They're totally not accurate. *g* I didn't end up doing the Parade-- slept right through the whole thing. But I did do the RL photo, so I felt like I'd done at least one group thing. ;-)
