2007 Sewing Year in Review

Happy New Year, everyone! This was a pretty lean year for me, costume-wise, so I'm posting all my sewing projects, not just costumes. Even though I stopped working at the Playhouse in October of 2006, it took until about June of 2007 for me to even get interested in sewing again. (Note to self: sewing for 40+ hours a week for seven months really uses up your costuming mojo for a *long* time.) I think 2008 will be better; there's several projects I'm really excited about, and that doesn't even include Masquerade since I have no idea what we'll be doing for that. :) My 2008 possible-projects post is here; the only addition since then has been an Imperial officer, since I've finally found fabric for it.


1. Dreamgirls Leia
With kelbebop, Corli, and sirrogue, our entry in this year's San Diego Comic-Con Masquerade. I'm the one in the middle. Chronicled more extensively on my website, here.

2. Han Thunder Solo

3. Leia PJ pants
To match the ones I made for my padawan kataline last year!

4 & 5. Final project shirt & skirt for patternmaking class
For some reason, I thought it'd be a great idea to do a cute button-up shirt and a skirt as my final project for Patternmaking I. This led to me raining curses down upon my own head the night before it was due, thinking, "Do I really need sleeves? And a collar? And buttons?" But I like how it turned out. This picture's not great on the details, but basically the upper bodice is gathered to an underbust band, and then it's princess seams down from there. We shall not speak of my final project skirt, which turned out ugly and ill-fitting.

6 & 7. Holiday skirt and skirt for class
I've had the fabric (nice red dupioni) for this for two years, and I finally got around to making it this year! We had to make a full-scale skirt pattern as homework in my class this fall, so I made my favorite shape-- flared slightly more than A-line, with a shaped waistband. I didn't take a picture of the skirt I made for class, but this red skirt is made with the same pattern. There's a gathered row of tulle stitched around the bottom of the lining, to make the skirt poof a little.

I'm still impressed with your ambition to take a pattern making class, though I suspect it will give you the skills to expand your costuming potential.

Thanks! I've been wanting to take it for awhile, and I had the time free, so I went for it! Next fall, draping or tailoring!

Very nice! Did you draft a basic block based on your measurements and go from there? I <3 my basic block. There are times when I really wish I had a dressform I could adjust to my measurements. I like draping --> drafting more than plain flat pattern methods, since I'm a tactile person, but whatever works, works! Hope you have fun in your next class! :)

No, we didn't draft our own blocks; we just picked one of the standard sizes and traced. (Community college, remember.) Luckily, I'm pretty close to a standard 10 on top. Bottom's a little wonkier, but I get around that by making everything flared. *g*
