Eeee, you guys, you guys! I just won third place in my category (Daywear/Career Wear) at my school's annual fashion show! Here is my pretty model in my dress:

I was totally shocked! I kind of hated this dress while I was making it; it wasn't turning into what I wanted it to look like, but I had to keep making it because I had to turn it in. But after some consultation with my teacher I recut the side front panels so the stripes were better-arranged, and now I kind of love it. When it came out onstage I was like "Oh, that looks way less shitty than I thought it would!" And third place! There were, I don't know, maybe 15 or so outfits in my category? And a lot of them were really, really good! I honestly didn't think I had a shot, since my dress was so simple compared to a lot of the looks.

The fashion fabric is linen or a linen blend, I'm pretty sure; [livejournal.com profile] peddler_creates and [livejournal.com profile] aviendiora, it's that stuff I bought at the FIDM scholarship store that last time I was up in LA. Dollar a yard, baby! I'm really glad I got four yards since I used almost all of it. There might be enough left for a skirt. My model was like "Can you make me one of these? I love it!" and I was like "Find me some striped fabric, and sure!" She wore it really well. Anyway it probably wasn't the best fabric choice, since BIAS PANELS ARE BIASY LOL, but whatever, I totally love the stripes. Oh and I forgot to mention, I made this for Patternmaking II. So I flat-patterned this dress from a basic sloper. (I'm really tired, can you tell?)

ETA: Here is the dress that gave me the idea for the chevrons down the front, although I did the rest pretty differently. I bought the fabric because I loved it, but I honestly wasn't sure what to do with it. So I basically went back through the Dress-A-Day archives (and did some googling) looking for striped dresses until I found one that I really liked.

This is me with my medal, which is a pair of little scissors with leopard-print handles. The white ribbon means third place. It is the best medal I have ever gotten because it is functional! I could totally cut a bitch with that. Please excuse my shininess; it was *very* hot in there. Also we had been clapping for about two and a half hours. Fashion shows are very hard on the hands because you're clapping for every look that comes down the runway!

You know what else was weird? Watching someone else wear something I had made. All I could think of was Project Runway: "When I saw my dress come down the runway, I..." (...was relieved that it didn't look like ass.) I guess it's happened in theater, but that's different. The clothing's only part of it, there. Here, it was everything. Well, and having a good model helped. (The entire show, by the way, was student-produced. No professional models or anything. Yay community college cheap budgets. Hey, where else can you take a patternmaking class for sixty bucks?)

Oh, and as for the subject line: Yeah, there was way too much tootie in this show. Male and female.

The dress may seem simple, but the stripes are really striking, especially at the top where the V extends beyond the lower portion. I really like it.

Thank you! I wasn't sure about that V at the top so I'm glad that you like it!

Your dress is adorable! It's simple, yes, but really unique at the same time. I bet a bunch of people put "too many mind" into it and overdesigned. I always do! xF

WOW! I love it. What you did with the stripes is so flattering. You've got me thinking about trying to do something similar with a sweater. . .

Thank you! I would love to see what you could do with this as a sweater! (That grammar is terrible, but I think you take my meaning.)

Ooo, I like this very much! Man, it takes real talent to make stripes attractive! This dress is perfect for curvy girls!
Congratulations on third place!

Care to show us what won first in your class?

Thank you so much!

I don't even know what won first place in my class! The awards were completely rushed and weird-- I have no pictures of anything but my dress. But I'm willing to bet it was this really cool ensemble with a reversible jacket.

Can totally see why you won, that's an amazing, simple, gorgeous design. Stripey goodness, lineny goodness, someone-would-actually-wear-it goodness, it has it all. congrats on a great idea!

Now i want to go sew the vintage suit patterns i bought before i become huge...

That's an awesome dress, great job! [livejournal.com profile] enkidude also likes the stripes as arrows.

Yay community college cheap budgets. Hey, where else can you take a patternmaking class for sixty bucks?

Yay, indeed! My art classes are through our rec dept for now (averages about $5/week), but I always have my eye on other great classes through comm. college.

That is a really nice dress. I'm not surprised you did well in the competition -- it seems much harder to make something simple, elegant, and flattering than people think. I also suspect that if you wanted, you could make that dress and sell it to a wide range of people. And how often can you say that at a fashion show? I have no idea what "So I flat-patterned this dress from a basic sloper." means, but I'm glad you know how to do it. It sounds impressive. :-)

I'm glad that you're keeping engaged with costuming and design. It's so easy to let those interests drop, and you have real skills that shouldn't be left behind.

Aw, you made me blush! I'm really enjoying taking these classes-- I'll probably take tailoring in the fall. It's funny, because the majority of the people in the class are looking to go into the industry, and all I want to do is improve my costuming. :)

A sloper is a base pattern that you start from-- like this (http://vintagesewing.info/1940s/42-mpd/illust/01-sloper.jpg). With flat patterning, you start from that basic sloper and then manipulate the pattern-- like moving darts, creating new seams, etc-- so you get something that looks different, but fits the same. Or, if not fits the same, fits predictably (like if you're adding lots of extra fullness or something).

This is gorgeous! Congrats! In all my years of competitive sewing I would say most of the time it was the simple projects that won. This dress fits beautifully - not a surprise!!!

This is impressive! Matching stripes on the bias is NOT easy.
The cut is crisp, and flattering on the model.
I am kind of amazed that you saw that fabric and envisioned
this dress. Your talent is out now!

From: [identity profile] jainamsolo.livejournal.com
Thank you so much! It was a little easier than I expected to match the stripes, but still tricky. I did it one piece at a time, and when I laid out the first piece, I drew where the wide stripes fell on the pattern piece, so when I laid out the second piece, I just matched up the lines. Also, the fabric was pretty forgiving, which helped.

And when did you get so blonde?!?

Date: 2008-05-22 05:14 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jainamsolo.livejournal.com
HAHA NO. You seriously don't even want to know how long this dress took to make. I am the biggest slowpoke ever.

I started going blonde in February! I'm even blonder now cause i got highlighted again on Saturday. :) It's for my Yvaine costume this summer. And because I wanted to be long and blonde at least once in my life. Come September, I'm chopping it off again.
