skatey ladies and dancing

Yay, I got to watch my TiVoed recordings of the ladies and ice dance Nationals. (I'd been keeping up with the results as they were posted but didn't get a chance to watch till later.)
Ladies:
- Nnnnnggghhh. Rachael Flatt is just so *boring.* She goes out, lands everything, huge scores, and I've already fallen asleep on the couch. I LIVE FOR ARTISTIC INTERPRETATION AND PERFORMANCE. GIVE ME SOMETHING, WOMAN.
- On the other hand, I am liking what Mirai seems to be turning into, as a skater. There were a couple of moments during her LP that were very Michelle-in-Salome-ish for me. (That is Michelle at FIFTEEN, folks. FIFTEEN. Also, it's really jarring to watch programs from the old system when you've just mainlined a bunch of new-system stuff. The spins are so short! There are moments of quiet and rest! Not everyone does a $@* Biellmann!)
- Oh, Sasha. I just-- I don't know. She seemed so small out there. I've always said that I would *love* her, if only she would actually look like she's enjoying herself on the ice. Her short was a step in that direction, for me, but it still felt like she had kind of a mask on, you know? And then the long...yeah. I can't say I'm sad she didn't make the team, but it would have been nice for her if she'd been able to finally have two solid programs at the same competition.
Dance:
- Um, so. I love Meryl and Charlie, and I love Tanith and Ben. A lot. But I...kind of really don't like either of their free dances this year? T&B's is so abstract, there's nothing that really grabs me-- not to mention Ben's godawful Elvis-jumpsuit-with-wings-and-chest-rhinestones outfit. And as for M&C, you know, if you have to do Phantom, can we *please* have one that doesn't start with the damned organ music or include Music of the Night? It just seems so juvenile. (I think you *can* do music from the #bannedforeverlist, if you do it right-- Mirai's PotC short used a bunch of lesser-known tracks which I think worked really well.)
- The ODs, however, were Quite Awesome. Anytime Ben wears bootcovers-that-look-like-actual-boots is okay by me. And obv, Bollywood FTW.

I hope Mirai gets some love from the international judges, just to show that artistry can still win.

Date: 2010-01-28 04:07 pm (UTC)Flatt needs a nose job and a personality transplant. Not that any of the OTHER ladies out there interest me, but she takes lifeless technical skating to Schuba-like levels of boredom. But then let's be honest, the only way a US lady is ending up on the podium in Vancouver requires Flatt to skate the program of her life and at least FIVE other skaters to implode. Any one of Yu-Na, Mao, Miki, Joannie and even Carolina only need to have a good day to belong ahead of her. Flatt needs both to have a perfect day and for them to have bad ones. The only one she could expect to beat is Carolina, because it's 50-50 whether Kostner has a good day or a really really horrible one.
Oh, Sasha...at least this time I didn't feel like she looked like she was having a root canal, and she skated with real artistic maturity this time. If she'd only done more competing and been able to stand on her jumps, instead of ending up behind the tedium twins, Flatt and Wagner.
I am torn in ice dance. I REALLY would like to see B/A win. OTOH, I like D/W's programs better. Oh, well, as long as Domnina and Shabalin crash and burn I suppose I wouldn't care if the Italians win the OGM. (Hopefully some Aboriginal shaman is putting the curse on them.)
