I got all wedding-buggy again walking through Michael's today. Currently trying to scare up ideas for neat, fun favors that people will keep/enjoy. They must be appropriately geeky. Suggestions?

Also, thank heaven, Mom agrees that we must have real flowers at the wedding. I'm well aware of how practical, cost-saving, time-saving, stress-saving, etc, fake flowers are, but dammit, I want real flowers.

Oooog. Am on the mend and able to eat semisolid food now, with the consequence that I ate way too much for dinner. Oooooog. Very full, tummy hurty. But mac 'n cheese was sooo good. Oooooog.

Favors? Candy is always good. When we do rituals we make a TON of chocolate suckers for centerpieces - pretty cheap, you can do 'em yourself with those cheap baking tins, a couple plate warmers, and molds, very easy... And white chocolate comes in every color under the sun, and there are molds for anything you can imagine. And candles: For Imbolc we had red rose floating candles in those small round glass bowls... And rose buds made with Hershy kisses and tissue paper. Of course, these are all perishable.

Big fat word on the real flowers. And you can do a lot of nice, minimalist things with just a few of the less expensive varities... Martha is a good source for that kind of thing.

Mac & cheese is always good, though. Comfort food! Of course (YMMV) it's better saved and microwaved on the next day... The traditional Kraft kind, anyway.

Damn. Now I'm hungry.

I've been pondering candy...Mom and I used to make molded chocolates all the time, so we have molds and I know all about making them...hmmmm.

I may have to ask for your help on using Martha as a source for ideas. I've kind of avoided her my whole life.

Mmmmm, mac n cheese. I think I'll go downstairs and reheat some right now...

Jaina, I've made little miniature wedding cakes for favors, and also chocolates molded into wedding cakes, and wedding bells. I've also seen a wedding with cookies printed with the bride and groom's picture. (Edible images are quite popular right now.) Also, I've seen memento soaps in wedding magazines. Not sure what I think about it, but I suppose it's pretty. For my part? I like Chocolates!

At my own wedding? We had centerpiece candle arrangements that pulled apart into individual candle holders- I got them at Things Remembered, some eleven years back, but they were v. pretty and everyone who had a chair, had a candle to take home, with some flowers attached.

And let me be the voice of Fake Flowers- When the day is done, you'll remember it in a blur. But if you have fake flowers, you can incorporate them into your home decor and get a warm fuzzy feeling every time you go past them. (Of course, I'm getting divorced, so every time I go past the rose display in my mother's guest room, I get queasy, but that's neither here nor there!)

Glad you're feeling better. Remind me sometime to tell you my wisdom teeth horror story. It's a doozy.

Mmmmmmm....choooocolate....

Incorporating the favors into the centerpiece...that's a nifty idea. *ponders*

Remind me sometime to tell you my wisdom teeth horror story. It's a doozy.

I will be more than glad to hear it. I'm *so* tired of everyone saying, "Well, they told me it would be bad, but I recovered really quickly!" Yeah, well screw you all! They told me it would be bad, and it *was* bad! :-P

Was just walking through the kitchen, and got inspired. I collect Bride and Groom dolls, and among my collection are a set of resin figures that were gifts from my kids. Adorable little things, and they paid for them themselves- a dollar apiece at dollar tree. I don't know if you have a Dollar Tree store in your area- but it's worth looking, because they sometimes have just adorable little resin and porcelain figurines, frequently with a wedding theme or religious theme. (I bought the topper I used for Tim's communion there, and it was gorgeous- much nicer than some of the 30.00 statuettes I saw out at Tonini's bookstore. It was a porcelain statue of two children, a boy and a girl, recieving holy communion before Christ, and a big italianate cross. I intend to use it again next year for Alex's.)

I've seen centerpiece displays of those tacky plastic Wilton bridal people at weddings before, but if you could find something like the figures in my collection, you could create a beautiful centerpiece for the tables that could be taken home at the end of the evening.

Good idea, I'll keep my eye out. There's actually a decent dollar store next to the fabric store I like to go to...

How geeky is "appropriately" geeky?

Not that I will have any sort of helpful suggestions, what with being a guy and all, but I'm curious on that point.

Glad to hear your teeth are better, too. :-)

"Appropriately" geeky is, all my friends will giggle and think it's funny, and my relatives will be frightened/scared.

I think that's the overriding theme for the reception, actually. (The wedding itself will be normal, or as close to normal as I get. *g*)

Do you still have your wisdom teeth? Those would make good wedding favors.

*makes scary "GRRRR!" face*

As a matter of fact, no, I don't have them. They were all impacted so they had to break them into pieces to get them out. So ha ha. :-P

Bubbles. You honestly can not go wrong with bubbles. They are the single favor that is relatively inexpensive that everyone covets and keeps (at least until the run out of soap in them).

We just tied some ribbon in the wedding colors on the bubbles and since my uncle got us a ton of hershey's hugs and kisses we did little nets of those together with a hand stamped tag with Winnie the Pooh and piglet and some saying.

Whatever you do- do NOT use the End Theme from ANH recorded from an 8-track. It has sound effects from X-wings and TIEs going at it. ;)

Do you have a budget/prelim count for favors? I've actually got a couple of geeky ideas I'd be happy to reseach a bit further for you. :)

I'll make sure and tell Rogue. *eg*

It'll probably be around a hundredish. No budget yet, but my dad's paying. (Or so says my mom. Not sure if my dad's aware of this yet... *g*) Would love to hear your ideas!

Oh I loved Finding Nemo!! :) Saw it with Mark's mom and his almost 3 yr old niece Madison. She did great through it! :)

Something I was thinking of was getting little LED light keychains with some sort of artwork incorporated from the wedding or your intials with the date, or a favorite saying. You can get them as cheap as 1.50 a piece, plus a small set up fee for a minimum order of 100-150.

You know, lights - lightsabers-- a bit of an in-joke and homage to how your lives crossed paths to begin with. :)

If you have any ideas on what kinds of things at the reception- are you really going all out for it (costume theme? Theater geek/Science geek?) or just want traditional with touches of geekiness?

Why do I have a feeling your costume seminar could also turn into brainstorming for your wedding. ;)

How about those Luxan marriage brands from the "Sons and Lovers" episode of Farscape? ;)

We're doing Lindt truffles (at least, that's the current plan) - surprisingly not too expensive when bought in bulk.

Also, while in Colorado we saw these really pretty Waterford bowls/vases/centerpiece thingies for only $25 each (marked down from $80 at an outlet. I love outlets), so we're going to have them as centerpieces with floating candles and then give the bowls away as favors too (florists quote more than that for centerpieces, at least around here).
