My training grant is buying me a computer!!!!! EEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!! I have $1800 to spend. Suggestions on a good laptop would be wonderfully welcome, since I know pretty much nothing about them.

Kind of depends what you're looking for. The IBM Thinkpad series works really well for us at lab, and you can get a nice T series for that amount. If you prefer Apple computers, there's a 12" PowerBook in that range, and you can probably get good educational discounts.

Really, though, it all comes down to your needs. Does it need to run Windows? Do you need speed? Will you carry it around a lot, or is it more likely to just sit on your desk?

Hmm. Good questions.

It's likely going to come with me a lot, as I'll need it in lab and I wouldn't ever leave it overnight. So light would be a plus.

It doesn't need to be superfast, but I'd like it to be able to run the occasional game of Diablo or Warcrat.

Apple...I'm still thinking. I've been a Windows girl pretty much my whole life, but the lab computer is an Apple and I'm slowly getting used to it. Plus, there's always the "will it run on a Mac?" issue.

Whatever you do, do NOT get a Compaq laptop (if they still sell those)... or a Hewlett-Packard one, since they bought out Compaq. Horrible, horrible...

If I got a laptop, I'd get one from Apple. I have a couple of friends who love their powerbooks.

As it is, I have a Dell XPS Gen 4 desktop... I decided that after my horrible experiences with my Compaq laptop, I should stick with a desktop computer untill I absolutely need a notebook sometime in the future... even then, I would probably only get a notebook if I needed it for work, and in that case I would hope that I'd get one assigned to me from the place I work at, so I wouldn't have to buy one myself. :)

Well - you saw phantom_cheesy's computer last weekend - it runs great, and is fast - and has an amazing screen - but it's not light since it has that amazing screen - though it does play Diablo quite well...
