maybe I'm just too old
May. 30th, 2005 05:49 pmI kept hearing about how good Napoleon Dynamite was, and people kept referencing it (like an entire team at Nationals with "Vote for Pedro" shirts, which is apparently a reference to the movie and not to the former Sox pitcher), so Rogue and I Netflixed it. We watched it last night.
And turned it off after 45 minutes because our brains were leaking out of our ears.
I'm clearly missing something by not finding it remotely funny. Maybe you have to watch to the end? Or watch it with a certain crowd, like Kung Pow? I dunno. I know I'm not alone-- there are plenty of reviews on Amazon to the tune of "This movie sucks!" But I still kind of feel like a loser for not liking it.

Date: 2005-05-31 01:46 am (UTC)It is worth seeing to get all the references in Anakin Skywalker (the ND parody at atomfilms). Part of it is that the movie is just so slow, it drags and there really isn't a lot going on. For us, it reminded us of some of the kids we hung out with in high school- understanding the loner side of things and cheering on Pedro when he runs for president. Shoot, we both love underdogs too.
I'd watch ND again, I think the only reason we still have Ghost World on our shelf is so no one else will buy it for us.

Date: 2005-05-31 09:59 pm (UTC)We're a bit more with him. We didn't have to turn it off, but we got more laughs goofing around with each other and not so much from the movie, maybe a few smiles at best. I'm not sure where the humor lies exactly, because it seems to lie with feeling a certain way to the main character. Mostly I felt like it wasn't funny because 1) I sympathized with him and 2) he took himself seriously.
