So, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] knitress and reading way too much of the Yarn Harlot over the last two days, I now want to knit socks. The fact that socks are vastly more complicated than anything I've ever tried ("anything" being Jayne hats and pantas) matters not. I want to make socks, dammit, and even though the Knitting Olympics are over, I can still embrace the ideal and challenge myself to try something new.

Luckily, I have no sock yarn, so I can't. Ha! Instead, I'm using yarn leftover from Christmas knitting and making hats for the Dulaan project (again, inspired by [livejournal.com profile] knitress). Last night I cast on this double-knit hat, except with worsted weight, because that's what I had, so it'll be child-sized. I knit pretty tightly, so I'm not worried. Once I figured out how to get both colors on, and how to hold them (thank you, Knitting Help!) it seemed to go okay. I can work on it while we're watching our Veronica Mars S1 DVDs (yay for Netflix!).

On a completely unrelated note (and not referring to anyone on the flist), I really, really dislike attention-whoring braggarts.

Really really really.

Really.

Wow! Double knit in two colors is something I haven't tried -- it needs to go on my todo list. And yay for more Dulaan hats! The things we do for ODAE and yarn ::grin::.

I made my first pair of socks from this pattern. Using a heavier-than-sock yarn is great for your first pair because it's easier to see what you're doing. These socks are too thick to fit in shoes but make great slippers. And here's a pattern for socks in DK weight yarn. These socks are both knit from the top down and use a heel flap. You can also do the heel by short rowing and you can knit socks from the toe-up. Just lots o' choices.

It's been interesting so far. Slow going, but I like the results. Oddly, the inside of the hat is currently looking better than the outside-- I guess my purl stitches are more even than my knits, with this technique.

Thanks for the patterns! I'll probably give a sock a whirl with some of the random acrylic I have lying around, to see if I can get the hang of it. I'm trying really, really hard not to develop a yarn stash-- my fabric stash is already big enough!
