YAY! Good for Kimmie, she deserved every bit of it. I'm really starting to warm to her; she's beginning to show promise as a complete package, not just a little jumping pixie. She's got a long way to go, but then she's only 16. Good on her, that she had such a fantastic, clean performance. I kept yelling at the TV, "Don't think, just DO IT" and she did. Good girl.
I was really pulling for Fumie to win, because I enjoyed her Olympic performances and felt bad that she didn't medal. But a silver is good! She should be happy.
Sasha-- man. Honestly, I felt really bad for her. She just fell apart. What said it all for me was that her spiral sequence was wobbly. Usually, even if she falls or chokes or whatever, her spirals are still rock-solid and gorgeous. Not today, though. I guess what it comes down to is that Sasha hasn't figured out how to win. Sad.
Loved Sarah Meier! She'd look so much prettier in a dress, though. Boo for unitards.
Poor Joannie, I guess the pressure got to her. Better luck next time, doll.
Still loving Emily Hughes, because despite her lack of "polish" (as the commentators call it), you can just tell that she *loves* to skate, and I'll take that over technical ability any day of the week. As long as she keeps hold of that enthusiasm as she improves, she's going to be a fantastic skater.

Date: 2006-03-26 03:31 am (UTC)Unlike some people...Sasha should decide whether she wants to be a celebrity or a skater. I think she really enjoys the celebrity stuff more. A few fewer Oscar parties and more focus on skating and maybe she wouldn't wipe herself out so often.
And I hope this finally shuts up some of the skating fans who were saying "The Olympics won't REALLY count because the one who'd be guaranteed the gold can't be there because of the age rule." Sorry, if Mao were really all that and a bag of chips she'd be World Champion. Heck, she'd be on the podium. Enough, already. Give that jumping bean time to grow.
And on the subject of unitards, death to unitards. 'Nuff said.

Date: 2006-03-26 01:59 pm (UTC)Mao Asada couldn't have been on the podium as she did not compete in Calgary, nor did she compete at the four continents championship in February (her sister, Mai, did). Mao is still too young for both. The same goes for Yu-Na Kim of Korea, who just won world juniors over Mao. Both are likely to give Kimmie a run for her money next year, when they will be age-eligible for all events.
I agree that "the Olympics didn't count" is rubbish, though.

Date: 2006-04-01 06:49 am (UTC)Anyone saying the Olympics don't "count" because of the age thing is a very stupid person. Rules are rules. The rules were put in place specifically to prevent children like Mao Asada (or Yu-Na Kim) from winning Olympics or Worlds because they're so tiny and can jump like crazy. If Mao can still do triple axels in four years at age 19, then good for her, go and get that Olympic medal. But for now, enough. Shizuka is the Olympic champion, no qualifiers, no asterisks.

Date: 2006-03-26 08:22 am (UTC)I felt REALLY bad for Joannie. Apparently, two of her close friends (one was a training partner) died in a fatal car accident this month. A reporter asked her about it and she ran away to her coach just sobbing. :( (I don't know if the commentators on your channel talked about that.) it was really sad to see that story, then watch her skate and not pull it together.

Date: 2006-04-01 06:51 am (UTC)They mentioned a little bit about Joannie's accident, but they only said the training partner died, and it was only mentioned in passing while she skated. Poor girl. :(
