So James Luceno (author of the final NJO book [that's Star Wars, for those who have no idea]) had a book signing today at a nearby bookstore. We went. I was quite excited about this, since I've been wanting to meet the man for years and tell him that I know his kids. (I went to high school with his older son and was a summer camp counselor for his younger son.)

It was actually lots of fun, way more than just a signing-- he talked for half an hour about the NJO in general, overall plotting, etc, and he took lots of audience questions. Then there were trivia questions (Rogue and I both won nifty NJO baseball caps). Finally, he did the actual signings. Rogue and I got up to the table, and the first thing I said was, "I know your kids." He kind of looked at me and said, "Huh?" And I explained. And then he called over two women, who turned out to be his wife and daughter (whom I didn't know; she's older than I am), and told them who I was, and why I knew his sons. His wife remembered me as AHS's valedictorian, and that I had gone to Indian Creek-- she said people there still talk about me. That was a nice ego boost. ;) They all seemed totally tickled that I knew Carlos and Jake. And he signed our copy of The Unifying Force with "To Caitlin, who has now met the entire family." At any rate, it was really neat, and I'm glad we went. And we found out that Orson Scott Card is having a signing there on Monday night!

I loved Ender's Game...I loved the whole series, really. Well, okay, I didn't so much like Xenocide and Children of the Mind. Way too talky and philosophical. But I looooove the Shadow-books.

He did name-drop a fair bit (oddly enough, Mike was the person whose name was dropped the most), but not to the point of obnoxiousness (like in the books ). I had no idea that he was one of the really founding authors of the NJO...but it makes sense, given that I was told in late '98 or early '99 that Carlos's dad was going to be writing a Star Wars book. It was actually really cool. I'd love for him to come to a con sometime.
