Okay, apparently I did get this done tonight! I had a fantastic Comic-Con this year. For one, my dad
qui_gon_d and my brother
dmbtuxwaddle came to stay with us and go to the con from Wednesday through Saturday. And they costumed! Pictorial evidence is in the report. :) For another, even though it was crowded (and oh, was it ever crowded), I got into almost everything I wanted to see and wasn't really disappointed by any of it, and the volunteers/staff generally did a good job of packing the rooms as full as possible. Line management could still be better, but it's improving every year.
Fair warning, this is REALLY LONG. And really detailed. On we go!
Wednesday: Preview Night
After the Longest Day at Work Ever, I undertook the Longest Drive Downtown Ever. Seriously, it took me an hour for what should've been a 20-minute trip, max. Dear SD Convention Center, I really really hate how your traffic is set up. I had to park on the sixth floor of the garage next to the con, when in years past I've always been able to park underneath of the center itself. It was freaking crowded.
I made it to the floor with about two minutes to spare before they let the masses in, and got put on Give Out Free Stuff duty. That is my very favoritest of all booth jobs! It makes me feel popular and loved, especially when the little kids come up and shyly ask you for something. *g* We had these really, really slick Clone Wars posters to give away, I think four or five different ones. I managed to give out almost all of them without papercutting myself. *is proud* Unfortunately due to a miscommunication, I thought we'd have more posters to give out in future days, and told people that, but it turned out not to be true. :( Sorry, people whom I inadvertently lied to! I wore my Roslin '08 t-shirt and got a lot of comments on it. Some people even took my picture!
My favorite part of Preview Night is seeing all the friends I haven't seen since last con season! Aaron, and Cindi, and Fen, and
kay_dee70, and GASean, and Matt, and Brian, and all the 501st guys who somehow know my name (and whose names I am slowly matching with their faces!). And of course Mary! I was watching out for Dad and Sean too, because I hadn't seen them yet, and finally I spotted them on the other side of the booth, and then they came around the corner! And Sean said, "What are you giving out?" and I said "HUGS! I'm giving hugs!" and some random dude was like "I want a hug!" NO, YOU CANNOT HAS.
And then all of a sudden they announced that the floor was closing, and I was like WTF, it cannot possibly have been three hours already. I guess time flies when you're giving out free posters! We decided that Dad and Sean would drive home with me, since it was a shorter walk to my car and they were tired and jet-lagged, and Rogue would try and have food ready by the time we got home. I was prepared for it to take awhile to get out of the garage. I was not prepared to sit there for a solid hour with NOBODY MOVING. But Dad and Sean and I had plenty to talk about, so we made the best of it. And we totally proved their flight's captain wrong; there are *not* six state capitals that start with the same letter as their state, and Anchorage is sure as hell not the capital of Alaska! I knew those Animaniacs songs would come in handy someday.
Anyway, we eventually got out of the garage, and I outdrove a train! (Toph, you rule.) And we got home and Rogue was finishing up a chicken feast! NOM NOM NOM. And we ate like the starving people we were and then we went to sleeeeeeeep.
Thursday: Sith Cheerleaders, Dr. Jones and his son, Sarah Connor Chronicles, and asking questions at panels (or, OMG BEAR MCCREARY ILU)
Costume: My official Sith cheerleader
I left the boys sleeping at home (or rather, I left Rogue sleeping; Dad and Sean were up) and trucked downtown at 8:30 for the Sith Cheerleader photoshoot we were having at 9. Earrrrrrrrly. I ended up parking at the far Petco garage, because it was the path of least resistance, and I called Kathy as I hurried along to tell her I'd probably be late. Luckily for me, she said she was late too! So I didn't worry quite so much. I went up and over the stairs in the middle of the center, and found another cheerleader named Rachel, but neither of us was quite sure how to get to where we needed to go. Then Kathy found us, and between the three of us, plus some outside help, we figured out how to get to the photoshoot location. And everyone else was like "WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN" and we were like "THIS PLACE IS CONFUSING OKAY."
So anyway. There were eight of us, plus three Sith Lords, and some random other troopers and such. The photoshoot was lots of fun, except I kept having to kneel on the concrete! Ow. Here are a few sets of pictures:
Rachel's
Kim's
A 501st guy's
We had an "official" photographer, Steven, who was the one who arranged us and gave us poses and such, which was awesome. I don't think he's got his pictures up yet though. He was dressed as Ten (a really good Ten!), which was pretty funny. I think Ten would get a kick out of photographing a bunch of fictional cheerleaders. This may be my favorite picture so far; I love how everyone else is like "are we posing? what's going on?" and I'm like "YAY CHEERLEADING!!!"
After that, we trooped down to the Gentle Giant booth to take a cheerleader photo with Jabba, and then we went over to the SciFi booth to take pictures on their weird curvy bench. At that point, Kathy and I decided we should really get upstairs to be sure of getting seats for the Bear McCreary/Richard Hatch BSG panel, since it was in a smallish room (6B). We came in during the middle of the previous panel for Kings, which I think is a retelling of the David and Goliath story? Not entirely clear; we missed the clip they showed. But Greg Grunberg was moderating, that was pretty cool.
While we were sitting there, Corli texted me to say she needed me to sign the permission form for Masq, so I told her where we were, and she came by during the break, along with Angie (Baby from Space Girls, also Bride of Frankenstein in our Masq entry). Hugs for Corli and Angie! (Side note: I had never before realized how awesome text messages are during cons. I texted more during those four days than I have during the entire rest of my *life.*) I also met Alison, aka Taeriel, who was wearing her beautiful Leia Ceremonial dress and necklace! She came and sat with us for the BSG panel.
The BSG panel! I was pretty much there for Bear, but the rest of it was interesting too. They talked about the original remake that they had been planning to do, and showed some test effects/animations they had made. A lot of the stuff looked very similar to how things look on the current BSG-- the Vipers coming out of the launch tubes, the particular way they flipped end-over-end, Galactica itself. That was neat.
But the main attraction-- OMG BEAR MCCREARY I LOVE YOU. He was so awesome-- he made a freaking fanvid to the full version of All Along the Watchtower! It was GREAT BEYOND WORDS. He talked about how RDM first told him he wanted to use AATW in the show, and Bear was like "..." at first but then really ended up liking what he was able to do with it. And he showed this hilarious video that I'm guessing was made for the concerts he did earlier this year. First, it showed him going to James Callis's house to have an interview with James, and James was basically acting like he had no idea who Bear was, and then once he figured out he was the music guy, he was like "Okay I have this song that I wrote, and it's awesome and you have to put it in the show, here let's jam on the piano" and the words were just a bunch of swears, which was hilarious but a little awkward cause I'm pretty sure there were some kids in there. And then the second part of the video was James going around to everyone in their trailers asking them to say a little something for Bear's concert video, and they all acted like they had no idea who Bear was. Katee was like "We have music on the show? Oh, the drumming? I just thought that was Eddie hitting stuff on the set." The best part was EJO and Michael Hogan at the end-- EJO was like "Bear? That's not his name, right? What kind of name is Bear? Like a bear? RWWWAAAARRR!" and he roared and I almost fell over from laughing. Oh, oh, I found the video! Here!
OKAY SO. They took some questions and I got up, but they stopped when I was two people from the microphone, and I was sad. But then they took questions again, and this time I LEAPT out of my seat and was first at the microphone, which was apparently kind of funny. So I asked Bear if he had started the music for the back half of the season yet, and if so, could he tell us anything about it. And he said yes, and yes, that the music for the first-half finale had ended on this super happy note, but the beginning of the back half is the most depressing music we've ever had on BSG, that everything we've had before now has been cheerful compared to this. (!!!!) And he also said that because the Gaeta singing went so well, he's working with another cast member on a singing bit for the back half, and possibly with multiple cast members. He didn't specify whether the characters would actually be singing, or if they would just be voices on the soundtrack. I'm pretty sure I clapped my hands in glee. And then I said, "Thank you Bear, I love your blog, love reading about the thoughts behind the music" which I think was pretty restrained, considering that what I wanted to say was OMG BEAR I LOVE YOU. And I sat down. PHEW. And I have no idea what happened for the rest of the panel.
After the panel finished, I met up with Cordelia outside, and I also met Belle (Yeoman Rand for our Masq entry) who was just coming out of another panel. After everyone else had moved on to other activities, Corli spent a few minutes going over the middle of our choreography with me. Then we headed downstairs to meet up with Brianna (Syndrome), who'd just lost her badge, plus Rogue, Dad, and Sean, who had just arrived.
I was prepared for Dad and Sean to look completely awesome, because I knew how much work they'd put into their costumes, but when I saw them for the first time, I just couldn't help it. I squeed. And then I jumped up and down and hugged them and squeed some more. I mean, do I not have the most amazing brother and dad in the entire universe?

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
After the Doctors Jones got filmed for some sort of podcast or something, the boys set off to wander the floor and get their pictures taken a lot. I went over to the Star Wars Shop to see if anyone there was willing to trade their 1-4 shift for my 4-7. I didn't have any takers, but Sam volunteered to outright take my 4-5, so I could go to the TV Costume Design panel (thanks Sam!), and Matt said it would probably be fine if we had to leave early to go to Masquerade rehearsal.
So I went and caught up with the boys at the back of the hall, and we had a cookie and a drink, and took a family photo, and stopped by the Browncoats booth and entered the raffle, and explored the far end of the floor, with Sean and Dad getting stopped for pictures all along the way. I giggled like an idiot every time it happened, and I told more than a few people that those two were my brother and my dad and it was their first time costuming and didn't they look awesome??? I was very very proud.
I went up to the TV Costume Designers panel about 20 minutes early to make sure I got a seat, which turned out to be a good idea since the room completely filled up! I spotted
rhynndavrie and
aviendiora on the far side of the room and went to go sit with them; we were joined a bit later by Kent and two of his group members, Sa and Danica. He gave me some tidbits on their revamped Emerald City skit-- two new Oz citizens, a set piece, and a surprise appearance at the end! Oooh!
The costume designers panel was much, much better than the one I attended two years ago. Although that might've been because I was really interested in the designers themselves-- Shawna Trpcic (Firefly, Angel, Dr. Horrible, and apparently Power Rangers!) and Amanda Friedland (Sarah Connor Chronicles). The guy from Lost had gotten delayed coming down from LA, which was fine by me because it meant we got more time with Shawna and Amanda! Each of them talked a bit about their background, showed a short video of the different shows and movies they'd worked on, and then took questions. Shawna's Q&A was great for me-- those damn Kaylee ruffles ARE silk organza! Now I have to make mine again. She also mentioned that she was inspired to do the pink hues down the skirt by mixing watercolors, I think.
When it was Amanda's turn for Q&A, I was waving my hand like a lunatic, because I had a question I really wanted to ask. Finally, they called on me (I was the last question!) and I said, "Cameron has really fascinating fashion sense for a robot. Can you talk a little bit about that?" I swear, she was *bouncing* as I asked the question, and she immediately replied, "Yes, I can!" She explained that, first of all, Cameron is very attracted to bright colors, since she comes from such a dingy future. So she wears lots of colors because she's drawn to them, even though they might not look great. Also, Cameron takes in everything she sees, all the styles of the kids at school and what's on TV and everything around her, and then synthesizes it, so she basically wears a mishmash of styles that appeal to her. Amanda said she imagines Cameron watching old movies every night, because she doesn't sleep, and then one day showing up in a Doris Day dress, which I thought was hilarious. And then I died of happiness because I'd gotten to ask TWO questions that day (when I'd never even asked a single one before, in six years of SDCC!) and both of the answers were great.
As soon as the panel ended, I made a beeline for the autograph hall, because I wanted to be close to the front of the line so I could get downstairs to the booth quickly and pick up my shift. Only there was nothing set up at their designated autograph area, not even a sign saying it was the right place. The people from the previous signing were still hanging out with all their stuff. Eventually, more people trickled over and we formed a line, figuring that if we made a line, they had to show up at some point, right? Ray-Hill-who-costumes-as-Mal (but was costumed as Dr. Horrible for the panel) finally went in search of them, and found out they'd gotten lost on the way, but they were going the right direction now and would be over shortly. The girl in the front of the line started hauling away all the crap the previous people had left, and pulling over extra chairs, which was really awesome of her.
And then finally Shawna and Amanda showed up, along with the Lost guy! (Haha, he's from Lost and they were all lost!) I was second in line to get my autographs, and Amanda said, "Oh, you're the person who asked me that great question!" And all my careful composure went out the window and I went *totally* fangirly and don't even remember what I was blabbering on about, but hopefully I didn't scare her too badly. Oops. She signed my poster "Caitlin, I love your enthusiasm!" which made me even bouncier, and I bounced downstairs and into the booth, where I was put to work giving out more free stuff, this time Indiana Jones booster card packs.
A little after 6, Rogue and I left to go meet up with the rest of our group, plus Dad and Sean, for Masquerade rehearsal. We worked out the spacing and went through it a bunch of times, and I realized I really needed to practice spraying the hairspray on cue! Things were coming together, though, and I started to feel like maybe our skit could be competitive this year, even though we were doing it completely as a fun thing, since we ended up pushing our Big Giant Idea to next year.
Then Dad and Sean and I went home to shower, change, and get some dinner, and Rogue went to help run Dan and James' Supercolossal Fan Race. As we were getting ready to leave the house to go to BJ's, Rogue came home-- they'd only had one team enter the race. Sadness. :( :( :( He elected to stay home and work on his Londo headpiece, though, so it was just three of us for dinner (which was super yummy). Then we came home, and washed all the washable Indy clothes, and went to bed!
Next up: Friday, or EPIC AVATAR PANEL IS EPIC.
