Have attempted to drag self out of ROTK-induced solemnity by watching Christmas Eve on Sesame Street, my favorite Christmas special ever.

It worked. And inspired an icon.

I had forgotten how hilarious Sesame Street could be. Poor Cookie Monster, trying to write a letter to Santa asking him to bring cookies, only he keeps thinking about the cookies and getting hungry, so he eats first a pencil, then a typewriter, then a telephone. And his perspective on leaving Santa something: "Ohhhh, good idea. Santa give me cookies, and me give Santa-- necktie!" Priceless.

Nori and I were just talking about this, except we were talking about the Bert/Ernie Gift of the Magi subplot. That Mr. Hooper, he was a good egg. Before he died.

Personally, I prefer the ubermuppet Christmas special that was the first overlap of the Sesame Street characters AND the Muppet Show muppets AND the Fraggles. That's hardcore.

I remember reading The Gift of the Magi in middle school and immediately thinking, "Ohmygosh, it's just like with Bert and Ernie on Sesame Street!" Good times.

Oooh! My favorite Christmas special! For years, I've been watching it on an ancient VHS taped off the Detroit PBS station twenty-odd years ago, which cut off the title and the end credits. We got the DVD this year, and besides being amazed that it wasn't all fuzzy, I got to see the 'monk's reward' ending with Cookie Monster (my all-time favorite Muppet.) Now, if I could get a DVD of "Big Bird In China" I'd be a happy camper.

"Where typewriter?"

"Scotch pine delicious, but Douglas fir give me heartburn."

Curious, what exactly is a "monk's reward"? I can guess from context, but am wondering about the origin...

Lol, "monk's reward" is movie slang for the little cookie at the end of the credits--called the 'monk's reward' because apparently they think it requires a monk's patience to sit through the credits. Examples are things like the Lockheart book after the credits of "Chamber of Secrets", Vader's breathing in TPM, and at the end of "Airplane!", the man STILL sitting in the cab.

oohhhhh, okay, thanks! I guess I always get the monk's reward, since we always sit through the credits. :)

for at least 20 years - with a few misses here and there. Also upgraded from ancient recording a few years ago, the whole family including our first in law enjoyed the viewing.
