I kept hearing about how good Napoleon Dynamite was, and people kept referencing it (like an entire team at Nationals with "Vote for Pedro" shirts, which is apparently a reference to the movie and not to the former Sox pitcher), so Rogue and I Netflixed it. We watched it last night.

And turned it off after 45 minutes because our brains were leaking out of our ears.

I'm clearly missing something by not finding it remotely funny. Maybe you have to watch to the end? Or watch it with a certain crowd, like Kung Pow? I dunno. I know I'm not alone-- there are plenty of reviews on Amazon to the tune of "This movie sucks!" But I still kind of feel like a loser for not liking it.

It really is a LOVE it or HATE it film. I struggled to keep the movie on past even the first 20 minutes. And how it is in the start is exactly how the movie is till the boring end.

ND isn't one of those movies you can really put in the middle-- we liked it MUCH better than Ghost World for example, but it's not a favorite by any means.

It is worth seeing to get all the references in Anakin Skywalker (the ND parody at atomfilms). Part of it is that the movie is just so slow, it drags and there really isn't a lot going on. For us, it reminded us of some of the kids we hung out with in high school- understanding the loner side of things and cheering on Pedro when he runs for president. Shoot, we both love underdogs too.

I'd watch ND again, I think the only reason we still have Ghost World on our shelf is so no one else will buy it for us.

A friend of mine hated it. Some folks at my kung fu school said it's mostly good for quoting at friends after you see it.

I totally hated it too, with the exception of what passes for a climactic scene. Maybe just watch the last couple chapters.

Dan, who I saw it with, liked it much better than I did.

Um, no. I didn't like it either, remember?

Oh, thank GOD I'm not the only one. Everyone at my school was obsessed with that movie, but I never had any desire to see it. We ended up watching it in one of my classes, and while my friends kept laughing hysterically, I just stared at the TV and waited for Teh Funneh to show up, which it... never did.

So I guess we're both missing something. Does this mean we lose at making with Teh Funneh? :P

I didn't like it either. At all. "Wait, is this really all there is?" No worries.

Yeah - I took a look at it and said why would I ever want to watch that movie, then heard people say how funny it was, but still - especially after this post, I am really happy that I haven't bothered with it!

Tom and I rented it this weekend: my one roommate loved it and wants to buy it, the other felt it was sort of ok. I can't find his entry, but he too was puzzled.

We're a bit more with him. We didn't have to turn it off, but we got more laughs goofing around with each other and not so much from the movie, maybe a few smiles at best. I'm not sure where the humor lies exactly, because it seems to lie with feeling a certain way to the main character. Mostly I felt like it wasn't funny because 1) I sympathized with him and 2) he took himself seriously.

I absolutely could not have hated this movie more while I was watching it, but practically every single line is hilarious. I'm glad I saw it, just so I could understand all the quoting of it my sister does, but it's so slow. I found everyone to just be sad, not funny at all.
